Floral textured wedding cake
I thought I’d share my creative meandingerings during ‘twixmas’. So, here’s a short blog post about my foray into palette knife painting to create a floral textured wedding cake.

I try to add to my cake decorating and wedding cake design skills to broaden my repertoire as often as I get chance. During the early months of 2021 I was keen to try palette knife painting and, in February, designed this floral textured wedding cake… meet ‘Claramae’!

Featuring both palette knife painted and sugar flowers, drawing was as far as I got, with my attention diverting to remote wedding consultations and intimate wedding cake commissions. Following a subsequent busy Summer/Autumn/Winter of 2021 crammed with weddings and enquiries, early 2022 is the first opportunity I’ve had to practise the technique.
Palette knife painting
Floral textured wedding cakes are usually decorated using buttercream. As I don’t offer buttercream coated cakes I’d always planned to try the technique with royal icing instead. So, with some leftover royal icing and an old display cake ready for destruction, I scratched my creative itch.
Having coloured the royal icing in pinks, greens, yellows, coral and blue, I set to with my palette knives. I didn’t have a particular design in my mind. This was all about just playing and practising. Palette knife painting, I discovered, is a very engrossing and relaxing technique and I just went with the flow. With darkness falling I took a few quick phone photos and, to gauge interest, shared my progress in my instagram stories along with a poll. With a choice of ‘Rather like’/’Ooofft No!’ I was delighted that ‘Rather like’ won with 85% voting for it!
So, early next morning I continued… mixing and painting, and scraping off any flowers I wasn’t happy with! Finally, after adding some piped stems here and there amongst the abstract flowers, a design evolved. Given that I was quite happy with the end result, I decided to take some proper photos. I’ve named her ‘Florence’…

Also, here’s a video of the finished cake.
Floral textured wedding cake – continued…
A week later I decided to use any gaps I could find on the cake to practise some more… painting abstract pansies, a purpley pompom dahlia…

Another rose and some sweet peas…

another pompom dahlia, in coral this time, and some lupins!

I also shared a further short video on instagram.
Bespoke floral textured wedding cake
I’m normally very precise with my royal icing piping and lace brush embroidery so this abstract technique made a nice change! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed using this method but will continue to practise to improve my skills. Would you choose a bespoke floral textured wedding cake for your wedding?

If so, I’d be delighted to create it for you – just get in touch!
With love, Amanda x
