Favourite wedding cakes of 2022
As we enter the last month of 2022 I thought I’d look back on the year and choose my favourite wedding cakes of 2022. Not to diminish all the others but just to highlight three, for various reasons, that made me the happiest! I’ll apologise in advance that this blog is image heavy (all taken by me), so grab yourself a cuppa and enjoy the browse!
I’ll go chronologically, starting in May, with Hayley…

Blue & white sugar floral wedding cake, ‘Hayley’
I loved creating this cake as it was the first chance I had of using, on a real wedding cake, the lambeth piping skills (the scrolls around the base) learned earlier in the year with The Frostery.

Venue and wedding dress inspiration
Plus, those that know my style know how much I love a bit of piping! It’s such a pretty way to reflect you as a couple as it can be inspired by the other elements you have chosen for your wedding. The piping on ‘Hayley’ reflected both the Suzanne Neville ‘Savannah’ wedding dress…
and the couple’s venue, Pepper Arden Hall’s, glorious plasterwork ceiling. Luckily, Richard, the venue owner, kindly took many photos of his ceiling for me to use for reference…

and here is the design on the cake…

Floral styling
In addition, I had the pleasure of taking inspiration from the couple’s florist, The Enchanted Florist’s, fabulous floral styling which included beautiful powder blue hydrangea I wanted to plunge my face right into, but didn’t.

Delphiniums featured too – I adore blue flowers… and blue cakes!
So, this is Hayley, one of my favourite wedding cakes of 2022…

Pepper Arden Hall’s website states that the hall is “bursting with authentic charm & historical touches…. each room is full of character & charisma…” and it truly is! Consequently, I could have stayed all day exploring each beautifully decorated room. Also, delivery was an absolute dream as Richard was just so courteous and friendly. Finally, here’s Hayley on display at Pepper Arden Hall…

These days, with social media algorithms, still images aren’t sufficient so I filmed my delivery… here’s my instagram reel.

Another of my favourite wedding cakes of 2022 is….
Natalie…
Actually, the above sketch was the second iteration of this design. I wasn’t at all happy with my first rough sketch, designed at speed through no fault of my own. So, with the bride’s blessing I went back to the drawing board, taking my time and changing it significantly (for the better!), to come up with this design.
There are number of reasons Natalie is one of my favourite wedding cakes of 2022. Firstly, she is bold and modern, with a green and gold colour palette which is such a striking, elegant combination.
Secondly, I was really pleased with the bespoke hand painting to reflect the couple’s invitations…

You’ll notice I flipped it so it flowed in the same direction as the sugar foliage…

And not a single sugar flower in sight – but I was happy with the result!
Floral/foliage styling
And, finally, when I arrived at the fabulous Will’s Marquee, in the grounds of The Three Acres, I was thrilled with how well the cake complemented the couple’s styling too. The most fabulous work by The Flower Shop, Lindley…

Instagram reel
Such beautiful styling, therefore, I just had to make a reel for instagram.

Finally, on to the last of my favourite wedding cakes of 2022…
Meet ‘Hannah’…
Coral, crimson, burgundy, burnt orange, amber, pale pink and chartreuse sugar floral wedding cake!
Never shying away from colour, I adore vibrant and colourful florals. In September I was thrilled to be able to take inspiration from Swallows and Damsons impressive work, with a design including such a large variety of sugar flowers and foliage. Namely, hydrangea, pom pom dahlia, phlox, astrantia, strawflowers, veronica, echinacea seed heads, fern, beech and seeded eucalyptus….

Such a lot of work… here’s a video of me playing like a florist with the sugar flowers.
In addition, I made a (stylised) Scottish thistle to reflect the groom’s roots and tartan clan…

Also, I included some piping work inspired by the neckline of the bride’s dress…

Vibrant sugar floral autumnal wedding cake
Vibrancy was very important to the couple – they didn’t want muted, earthy autumnal in the slightest. Here are some full images of Hannah…

Aerial shots…

All set up…
The couple were hosting their reception on the family farm in a Wills Marquee…

Where fresh meets sugar…

I was so pleased how my sugar flowers complemented the fresh ones…

Again, as Swallows & Damsons’ flowers were just so beautiful, I made an instagram reel.

Feedback
I received absolutely lovely feedback on both the design and taste of the cakes from all three couples, two of whom also wrote glowing google reviews.
