First wedding cake 2019

First wedding cake 2019!

I so very rarely ask professional photographers for images and try to photograph my wedding cakes myself at the venue (with little success) and even more rarely receive them unprompted – that makes Laura Calderwood a very special photographer indeed.  The images of Z & T’s day(s) which Laura has provided are fabulous – so I just had to blog them!  And, I’m never just interested in the wedding cake images so have downloaded many and found it difficult to whittle them down to an acceptable number for this blog post.  Here goes…

The wedding venue

Carlton Towers… a magnificent Grade I listed Victorian gothic country house in Carlton, North Yorkshire, England.  What a place to say, “I do”!Carlton Towers

The wedding styling

The couple chose Natasha Jane Events who styled the venue beautifully…

The Design Process

The wedding planning was happening remotely so I had an initial telephone consultation, after which the couple were very sure they wanted me to create their wedding cake, so secured their date.  Right from the outset Z had her heart set on my ‘Maike’ design.  Given that I never make two cakes the same, we tweaked it to suit Z & T’s styling.

The bridesmaid dresses

Then, we considered the wedding party outfits – specifically their deep red colour for some pops of colour on the cake…Red bridesmaid dresses and green and white floral bouquets at Carlton Towers

The wedding dress

And we also considered Z’s dress… those ruffles!  Z was clear she wanted cascading sugar roses on the wedding cake, which left no room for any sugar or wafer paper ruffles (less is more!)  so, instead, I used royal icing brush embroidery to introduce this element of the dress into the wedding cake design.Newlywed walking down the aisle smiling at Carlton Towers

The final design

I met Z & T a month or so later, along with T’s parents too, and fed them lots of cake!

Flavours

After much deliberation they plumped for…

  • Masala Chai – aromatic sponge spiced with home made masala chai, infused with cardamom syrup and layered with masala chai buttercream…masala chai cake slice
  • Caramel & Praline – caramel sponge layered with almond praline buttercream and home made sea salted caramel sauce.  Z’s really not keen on almonds though so we substituted hazelnuts for the almonds.  sea salted caramel and praline cake slice
  • Madagascan Vanilla – classic Madagascan bourbon vanilla sponge layered with Madagascan bourbon vanilla buttercream and raspberry conserve.

Professional wedding photography

Never scrimp on your wedding photographer.  Always choose the absolute very best you can afford.  That way, you get images like these here.  Priceless.  Thank you so much to Laura Calderwood Photography for providing unbridled access to Z & T’s image gallery!  As the wedding cake maker I’m somewhat on the periphery though still very much invested in your wedding day.  So, I just love it when I get to peek into it.  Bit nosey like that 🙂 .

Lovely words

According to the 2019 UK Wedding Report 62% of couples valued Reviews as most important when selecting their wedding suppliers, so reviews really help vendors attract future clients and also give future couples a helping hand when choosing suppliers for their wedding.  Receiving feedback is such a boost and validation that I’m doing a good job.  Please feel free to read Z & T’s lovely feedback on my Comments page.    First wedding cake of twenty-nineteen – tick!
